CEGAH
CEGAH
is a grassroots non-profit organization founded in 1998 in response to the
government’s indifference in attending to the needs of the Garifuna
community when Hurricane Mitch hit. Based in the city of Trujillo, Honduras,
CEGAH works with 16 Garifuna communities. Much of their work consists of
sustainable agriculture projects, such as native seed conservation.
Their
various projects include:
- Cultural preservation, education, and documentation of traditional Garifuna
songs, history, stories, religion, food and more
- Publicity and denunciation of human rights violations incurred by the
Garifuna community including assassinations of leaders and robberies within
ancenstral lands
- Reforestation
- Exchanges between farmers working on sustainable agriculture projects
They are beginning to implement permacultural techniques learned during
the Convergence in their work.
CAMADDS,
in Chiapas, Mexico works to better social, economic, and environmental conditions
of the community. Using methods of alternative production and sustainable
development, they focus on ecological agriculture, microfinancing, community
and reproductive health, and rehabilitation. They create economic opportunities
for community members through micro-credit loans and revolving funds for
small businesses. Additionally, their center provides agricultural opportunities
for the production of all organic goods.
